McAllen hosting community meeting seeking resident input

McAllen is seeking resident input on the city’s future needs.

The city is hosting a community meeting Tuesday evening during which residents will be encouraged to give comments that will inform the city’s comprehensive plan.

City leaders and staff, both English and Spanish speaking, will be available at the meeting to receive that input and to help residents engage with the development of the comprehensive plan, according to a news release issued by the city.

The comprehensive plan is meant to guide the city in enhancing the quality of life for its residents and in supporting economic development over the next 20 to 30 years.

Specifically, it will guide the city’s decisions when it comes to transportation, infrastructure, land use, parks, economic development, community identity, development standards, and incentives and implementation.

“It’s important we hear from our residents, so as we plan for McAllen’s bold, sustainable future growth, we include what they would like to see,” Mayor Javier Villalobos stated in the release.

In addition to attending the community meeting, residents can also provide feedback by completing an online survey at www.mcallen2040. com. The survey is available in English and Spanish.

The entire project will be split up into four phases.

In the initiation phase, the physical, demographic, and economic context of McAllen will be reviewed to develop a snapshot of current conditions and to identify potential catalyst recommendations, according to the city.

The second phase will consist of drafting the vision as well as the guiding principles and goals by taking in community feedback.

The third phase will be developing the plan through committee and stakeholder meetings and community surveys.

Finally, the fourth phase is finalizing the plan with the city commission.

The community meeting will be held at the McAllen Public Library Auditorium which is located at 4001 N. 23rd St. It will take place on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

For more information about the community meeting, residents can contact the city’s planning and zoning department at (956) 681-1260 or by email at planning@ mcallen.net.
