Manufacturing has been a mainstay in the McAllen/Reynosa International Metro since the 1980’s. The region is home to a cluster of Tier I and Tier II automotive suppliers. The International Metro features 29 industrial parks with companies such as TI Automotive, Delphi Teck, and Panasonic, consisting of a manufacturing labor force of 136,000, and a young and growing population with a median age of 29 years. To support this industry with specialized labor, South Texas College offers the only FESTO certified training program in the U.S. which features PLC and automation systems, as well as Robotic Welding with state of the art equipment donated by General Electric.

McAllen has a thriving aerospace industry which employs over 3,000 people. The region is home to General Electric Aviation which refurbishes jet engine component parts and SpaceX which is designing the Mars Space Shuttle. In the McAllen/Reynosa International Metro there are currently 29 industrial parks, the Foreign Trade Zone and a young and growing population with a median age of only 29 years. The city of McAllen is laying the foundation to transform the region into a Medical Research Hub. The area is currently home to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System, Rio Grande Regional Hospital, South Texas Health System, and UnitedHealth Group. The healthcare industry currently employs over 31,000 medical staff professionals in McAllen. In 2016 the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine opened with 55 first year medical students and in 2019 DHR Research Institute opened an 83,000 sq. ft. state of the art research facility.

DHR Research Institution consists of 16 research labs; 2 core labs:vivarium, micro copy & imagining center, and is currently doing research in the following:

Strategically located just across the border from Mexico and between two International bridges, McAllen’s fresh produce industry is booming. In 2017 our region imported over 2 million tons of fresh produce from Mexico. We have become the #1 land port for fresh produce imports and the region is a member of Texas International Produce Association (TIPA).

McAllen is home to robust customer service contact center industry which employs over 6,500 people. The region is home to industry leading organizations such as T-Mobile, Spectrum, and Ticketmaster. McAllen’s large Hispanic population offers a large and young pool of bilingual candidates with a median age of 29, that can provide superior customer service in both English and Spanish. To support this industry, South Texas College offers world class training in Customer Service.

The city of McAllen is laying the foundation to transform the region into a Technology Hub. The area is currently home to data centers and the IT industry currently employs 1,500. The International Bridge is the tech super highway connecting the U.S. with Mexico transmitting all data.
